Jirawat Nawachak was born in Chiang Mai. A young man with a fiery passion for the sport of skateboarding, Jirawat is a driving force behind the sport, believing that one day it will gain more widespread acceptance in society, and pursuing the possibility that Chiang Mai’s government will actively consider creating new kinds of public spaces that could also accommodate the interests of today’s youth from a conceptual level. His years of effort have resulted in the construction of the ‘Chiang Mai Skatepark’, a public skating area for the citizens of Chiang Mai. The space represents the realized dreams of Chiang Mai’s newest generation, who were successful in negotiating for a public space that was truly created for skateboarders. Jirawat also works in the Public Relations office of the Thailand National Sports University Chiang Mai Campus, spending his free time on weekends and the skate ramps, organizing various activities to develop Chiang Mai’s youth community through their shared interest.

แนวความคิด / Concept

จากนิยามพื้นที่สาธารณะของเมืองสมัยใหม่ที่หมายถึงพื้นที่ที่ทุกคนในเมืองสามารถใช้ประโยชน์อันหลากหลาย โดยปราศจากเงื่อนไขในการเข้าถึง โดยไม่ได้จำเพาะว่าจะต้องเป็นพื้นที่ของรัฐเท่านั้น จากความสนใจในกีฬาสเก็ตบอร์ด ทำให้จิรวัฒน์ นาวาจักร์ สนใจพื้นที่สาธารณะสำหรับทุกๆ คน แม้จะไม่ได้เป็นคนทำงานศิลปะโดยตรง แต่แนวคิดของกลับน่าสนใจด้วยการใช้สเก็ตบอร์ดเป็นยานพาหนะ เขาจึงพบว่าถนนหนทางในเมือง และพื้นที่สีเขียวนั้น เป็นสิ่งที่ขาดแคลนในเมือง สำหรับนิทรรศการในครั้งนี้ จิรวัฒน์ ได้นำจดหมายที่เขียนถึงนายกเทศมนตรี และสเก็ตบอร์ดของเขานำมาจัดแสดง เพื่อให้เห็นความคิดของคนรุ่นใหม่ที่บางคนอาจจะยังไม่เข้าใจ วัยรุ่นที่ผู้ใหญ่อาจมองว่าไม่มีสาระ แต่ว่าพวกเขาก็คือประชาชนที่สนใจประเด็นพื้นที่สาธารณะ และอยากมีส่วนรวมในการทำให้สิ่งแวดล้อมนั้นดีขึ้น

It began with the interpretation of public spaces in Chiang Mai to mean ‘spaces that everyone in Chiang Mai could make productive use of, with no limitations to access, or are government-regulated spaces’. Coupled with his passion in skateboarding, these two ideas formed the basis of Jirawat Chaianan’s interests in public spaces for all. While not directly an artist, his interesting use of skateboards as a vehicle for commuting allowed him to notice that the city lacked green, public spaces. For this exhibition, Jirawat has displayed the letter he penned to the city Mayor, accompanied by his skateboard. His hope is to convey the perspectives of the younger generation that older people may lack, to let them know that the teenagers they so quickly disregard are also citizens who are concerned about their access to public spaces, and would like to take part in bettering their environment as well.
