Concept

BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID

For this short film, Pen-ek has chosen to convey the tremors within Thai politics that are the topic of much discussion today, shrouded in a white fog that signifies the pollution in the air, as well as the ambiguity of the situation, spreading a pall on our lives without us even noticing. The film follows a heavy-set woman called ‘Bay’, as she rests inside her apartment, watching clips of the speeches given by the leaders of youth-led demonstrations. As she watches, a white fog slowly encroaches into the room, eventually covering everything from the site, leaving only the voice of the demonstration leaders to be heard amidst the smog. Eventually, the smog recedes to reveal the message BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID.
