ธวัชชัย พันธุ์สวัสดิ์ เกิดที่กรุงเทพฯ ในปี พ.ศ. 2514 จบการศึกษาในระดับศิลปบัณฑิต (ประติมากรรม) จากคณะวิจิตรศิลป์มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ในปี พ.ศ. 2536 และปริญญาโทจากคณะจิตรกรรมประติมากรรม และภาพพิมพ์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ในปี พ.ศ. 2544 ธวัชชัย เคยได้รับรางวัลสำคัญๆ เช่น รางวัลเกียรตินิยมอันดับ 2 เหรียญเงิน ประเภทประติมากรรม จากศิลปกรรมแห่งชาติ ครั้งที่ 39 ในปี พ.ศ. 2536 รางวัลชนะเลิศ ประติมากรรม OSAKA Triennale Bureau ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ในปี 2538 รางวัลทุนสร้างสรรค์ศิลปกรรม ศิลป์ พีระศรี ครั้งที่ 15 ในปี 2558 และได้รับเลือกให้เข้าร่วมแสดงผลงานใน The 21st Biennale of Sydney ในปี พ.ศ. 2561 เป็นต้น ผลงานประติมากรรมของธวัชชัย ว่าด้วยการสร้างรูปลักษณ์จำลองสามมิติจากการรับรู้ด้วยผัสสะ ด้วยการผสมข้ามศาสตร์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเห็นและเชื่อว่าเป็นการเข้าถึงความจริงของสิ่งต่างๆ เช่น ทัศนียวิทยา คณิตศาสตร์ ผสมผสานกับกระบวนการเชิงช่าง ผลงานของเขาเป็นที่รู้จักกว้างขวางทั้งในและต่างประเทศ ด้วยประติมากรรมที่มีรูปทรงสลับซับซ้อน ผ่านการคำนวณอย่างแม่นยำ บวกกับฝีมือเชิงช่างอันประณีต ปัจจุบันธวัชชัยพำนักและทำงานในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่
Tawatchai Puntasawasdi was born in Bangkok in 1971. He completed his Bachelors of Art in Sculpture from Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Fine Arts in 1993, followed by a Masters degree from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpturing, and Printing, Silpakorn University, in 2001. Tawatchai was the recipient of many prestigious awards, such as achieving the Silver Medal (with distinction) in Sculpturing from the 39th annual National Sculpting Contest in 1993, the OSAKA Triennale Bureau contest in 1995, the 15th Silp Bhirasri Creative Art Scholarship in 2017, and being chosen to feature his works in the 21st Biennale of Sydney in 2018, to name a few. Tawatchai’s sculptural works are created to imitate three-dimensional forms through the sense of touch, combined with the cross-disciplinary knowledge from subjects that claim to see the fundamental truth behind all things – such as perspective and maths – as well as common practices in craftsmanship. His works are well-known even overseas, with his sculptures being known for their intricate carved patterns, which have been meticulously calculated and executed by the artist’s deft artisan’s touch. Tawatchai currently resides in Chiang Mai, where he also produces most of his works.

แนวความคิด / Concept
ประติมากรรมของ ธวัชชัย พันธุ์สวัสดิ์ เกิดขึ้นจากการหาสูตรคำนวณทรงกลมสามมิติบนกระดาษ เพื่อเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของปัญหาฝุ่น pm2.5 ประติมากรรมชิ้นนี้ได้ถ่ายทอดรูปทรงของฝุ่นในแบบขยายเพื่อให้ผู้ชมได้ตระหนักถึงปัญหาของวัตถุที่เล็กจนมองไม่เห็นด้วยตาเปล่า แต่ได้กลายเป็นปัญหาใหญ่ที่กระทบทุกๆ ชีวิต ผลงานประติมากรรมของธวัชชัยขนานแนบไปกับองค์ความรู้ ศาสตร์วิชา และความเชื่อที่มนุษย์มีต่อโลก จนทำให้เราเห็นว่าแท้จริงไม่ว่าเราจะพยายามบอกเล่าลักษณะหรือเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับโลกด้วยวิธีอะไรก็ตาม สุดท้ายโลกก็ยังคงแบนอยู่บนระนาบเดียวกันกับวิถีชีวิตของเรานั่นเอง การคำนวณวัดอย่างละเอียดได้กลายเป็นสำบัดสำนวนทางศิลปะของประติมากรรมชิ้นนี้ เป็นสิ่งที่สะท้อนให้เห็นว่าองค์ความรู้ของมนุษย์นั้นไม่อาจแยกออกจากสภาพแวดล้อม และปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้น ณ ขณะนี้ก็คือปัญหาที่มาจากมนุษย์เช่นกัน
Tawatchai Puntusawasdi’s sculpture was created by determining the formula used to measure the volume of a three-dimensional sphere on a piece of paper. The sculpture presents an enlarged image of a dust particle, to remind audiences of the various dangers posed by something so small it is invisible to the naked eye, with far reaching effects in all aspects of human life. Tawatchai’s sculpture is intimately connected to the knowledge, practices, and beliefs that humans have towards earth, which show us that no matter how we choose to interpret the world, the fate of the earth is ultimately tied to our lifestyle. This meticulous calculation has become the artistic accents and signatures of this sculpture, a reflection of the truth that human knowledge can never exist independent of its environment, the the problems that are facing us today were the results of nothing more than our own actions.
